We (OK, juse me) have a saying around my house. You can never have
too many harmonicas.
You're not the only one. lol
When I was playing every weekend, I used 14 harps regularly, but
brought way more with me.
I carry a clarinet case with a tray for the top level. The tray holds
18 harps in 3 rows. They are:
C (sj tuned) Eb (sj) G Hi R
B Richter D R F# Hi R
Bb sj D sj F R
A R Db R F sj
Ab R Db sj E R
G Lo R C R Eb R (bottom of
case holds 8 chromatics...I carry 3.5 & a small repair kit)
Our singer/guitarist liked to capo the first fret sometimes and
then play C fingering.
Ours do too. They are ex-Nashville
That meant I needed an F sharp harp. And he did some other songs
in flat keys, so I ended up with all 12 keys plus a couple of low
harps. He liked to do songs in their original keys.
Ours do too.
And of course I needed spares in all the heavily used harps.
I don't carry spares. I just switch harps OR use a chromo.
But, I had accumulated harps over the years, and I'm not hard on
them, so it was no big deal. Now that our trio is defunct, I have
way too many harps, but..... you never know.
I have 19 diatonics (incl the XB-40) and 9 chromos (4 are trophies
and not played).
Just got invited to play the anthem at our high school for a
basketball game later this year, so I can practice that. And I have
been working on "You Don't Know Me" with a country tuned harp after
hearing Berl Welch do such a great version at SPAH.
I am a huge fan of Jerl's. One of the most under rated country
players in the business. What key are you using? I don't remember
(without going into the garage for my song list) what key I use but
it is the same as Charley McCoy's version.

P.S. I hardly ever need more than 3 or 4 diatonics and 1 chromo for a
gig.

How many harps do you guys bring to one show that you actually
will use during the gig? I am currently gigging with only 5 right
now, but I am doing mostly blues/country/irish gigs. I am trying
to save up some $ to upgrade my amp setup..
