This is Jean-Jacques's answer when I forwarded him Martin's quest.

There is no secret. I use a Beyer TGX 80 for the clean sound and a
Shure Beta 58 in a tube preamp (JJ did not specify) for the crunch. One
has to have a good sound ingeneer and a mixer with a lot of gain.
