A volume pot shunts a variable amount of signal to ground.
A switch sends all the signal to gnd, or nothing.

True enough,  but that'll not be the "normal" way to build a volume 
control, where you usually take out the signal on the wiper
It will probably affect characteristics. Anyway I'll try it out - it might 
work....;-)
