I am more inclined to take a small amp and mike (or line out) to the PA when I know I will have my own monitor mix -- that way I'm not relying on the small amp to hear myself on stage. I can control what I hear of my playing (and everything else in the mix) AND have myself turned up in my monitor if necessary w/o turning me up in everybody's monitors -- like the gal singer. If I have to share a monitor (say with the singer) or have my monitor mix chained to someone else's (say the drummer), I want a larger amp so I have flexibility in controling my stage volume.
