Re: [Harp-L] What's so bad about micing to a PA?

What John says is somewhat true especially about upsetting the soundman but a good soundman will make you sound your best no matter how you treat them.

I worked sound for some years in London.

The 57 is favoured due to greater directionality, ie: it won't pick up as much of the other stuff on stage. I however favour the 58 and seeing as I primarily perform solo this works for me.

A simple test of running a 57 vs a 58 thru an IMT into an amp will tell you that the 58 will colour the sound less...

I also favour a small amp mic'ed through the PA rather than a big beast but mainly due to portability. When playing with loud egotistical guitar types it's a bit like bringing a penknife to a gunfight though.

All the best

OK... I'm not a "sound man".. I'm just a harp player.
But "I've been there".

In my opinion, the best way to mic a harp amp is with a Shure SM 57 aimed
at the the center of the cone of the FRONT one of the speakers in your
combo or speaker cabinet... An SM58 is almost, but for some reason beyond my
comprehension, not quite so effective. Other mics... Are not so good. In
fact, in my experience much MUCH worse.
I have never found a "line out" to deliver the goods...

BUT YOUR MILEAGE MIGHT VARY.

Get the advice of a good sound person!

They should know their own gear, and can sort it for you.

But NEVER UPSET YOUR SOUND MAN!

They can make or break you, however good you are.
