Re: [Harp-L] Harmonica Resolutions?

Thank you, Abner! (And thank you to the other person who sent me encouragement off-list. You know who you are.)

I have an action plan.

I Googled around for voice teachers in my area who claim to have any experience with blues, and came up empty. While I've never dared to think of mine as a "solo quality" voice, I *like* to sing, I can carry a tune well enough, and I sing with heart. I do want to improve my vocal technique at some point, but right now I just want to learn and practice some *blues songs*, so that I can be more versatile at jam sessions.

The action plan is this:

Tonight I'm going to go listen to a local band whose MySpace page says they like to do a lot of audience participation. (They used to do a blues jam in my town, but I didn't find out about them until after I started playing out. The jam got cancelled due to lack of turn-out. Alas.) Anyway, I'm going to go listen to them, and if the in-person chemistry feels at all right, I'm going to approach the lead guy and ask if he'll give me some music lessons, and what he charges, etc. He's a guitar player and lead vocalist; his band plays blues and R&B and classic rock and country; their MySpace page has a very long song list. If I can get together with him once a week and learn some songs and practice singing them while he plays guitar and offers pointers, I think I'll get the traction I need to sing at my local jam in a few weeks. (He already invited me to sit in with them and play harp -- based on a phone conversation when I was trying to find a local blues jam.)

Watch me go! :-)

And wish me luck. Heh.

Face down my fear, learn a half-dozen songs, and sing them -- through a microphone, in public (at the blues jam where I play harp).
