[Harp-L] pitch interference and organ trios
In regards to both Richard and Michael's posts.
Organs and Hammonds can often play pitches in the melody normally
associated with the bassline. This can indeed be a problem in terms
of clarity, but rarely in an organ trio where the Hammond is called
on to play both melody, harmony and bass at once. Same when organs
play solo. But, it's interesting to hear how people usually use
Hammonds in larger settings--usually higher drawbar settings, no bass
pedals and a lot less left-hand basswork as well.
How this relates to harmonica: with the POG or other dividers you can
often get into other ranges than normal, both higher and lower. So
while it may thicken up your own sound, it is worth noticing when and
how that thickening might interfere with others and be more aware of
pitch range because you are so greatly expanding yours. Thus, using
a POG in a guitar and harp duo you probably can take up a much bigger
sonic footprint than in a large band. Which is true of how most
people play as well--harmonica players in duos tend to be a lot more
active and sit out a lot less than in bigger bands.
