[Harp-L] Re: Overblowing all done?
When I was signed to RCA I played a concert at the United Nations and
Stanley Jordon was the other guy on the bill. He played this fast
hammered guitar stuff. Not long after that I started hearing everyone
doing it. I am now hearing blues players throwing in an overblow here
and there. Carlos Del Junco is a good example!
When James Whiting aka Sugar Blue came to study chromatic with me I
noticed he was not a Little Walter type player. Nor is Jason Ricci or
John Popper or JD Miller or a whole bunch of new players. When the
master of overblows, Mr. Levy, ran this technique to its current
heights, the cat was out of the bag so to speak and there ain't no way
to put it back in. Whether anyone will achieve Howard's level is his
lifetime is doubtful but if we continue to occupy this planet long
enough, someone will.
When I first started playing the harmonica my favorite players were
Sonnyboy Williamson, one and two, later Junior Wells, James Cotton and
Paul Butterfield and now Madcat and Paparozzi. Little Walter, Sonny
Terry and Big Walter were not my favorite players. Maybe just me, but
that is still the case.
Harmonically yours,
Roberto
