Why not have him use the circle of fifths?

Once he learns to use it to find harp positions, he can also use it to 
learn all sorts of theory related concepts, such as relative minors, 
number of sharps and flats in various keys ( 1 o'clock = 1 sharp, 2 
o'clock = 2 sharps, etc.) and so on. That way, you have one universal 
chart for many applications.
