We've had several discussions about what constitutes being a "Pro" harp
player, but I'm curious who we would name as the top pro guys, regardless of
what criteria we may use.

In no particular order, my list would begin something like this:

-Kim Wilson
-Jason Ricci
-Charlie Musselwhite
-Mark Hummel
-RJ Mischo
-Rod Piazza
-Tom Ball
-John Nemeth

This is nowhere near complete. Who would you classify as a pro blues harp
player?

Dear all,
I always use this currency converter when I do my purchases - very handy
http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/
An note on European VAT: When you ship from a European source to a
on-European destination VAT should always be deducted or better: Not even
e charged. This is a price reduction of 19% for purchases from Germany and
till 17.5% from the UK. Sophisticated internet stores normally explicitly
how this in their invoice.
Unfortunately some smaller on-line music stores do not. And here the trouble
egins: I never had a negative experience purchasing from Germany. However,
hen I purchased some chromatic harmonicas in the UK from two different
tores last year, their internet shops didn't show anything in the invoice,
hen I typed in my non-European shipping destination. I contacted both of
hem and Peter Blyth of "Harmonicas Direct" immediately reassured me that no
AT would be charged. The other - "Eagle Music Shop" - did not, as a matter
f fact and charged VAT.
Since I have similar experiences with other business branches in the UK in
his matter I would be interested if anyone else on Harp-L could confirm
his.
Best regards from sunny Berne, Switzerland
Tom

I never said that the null hypothesis can or will be proved--nothing
I've written should be interpreted that way, if it was then I should
 have been clearer.

If test after test (imperfect as they may be) fails to show that
people can hear a difference due to comb materials, that is not
insignificant, as you seem to be saying.

The whole point of the null hypothesis is that it it doesn't say
anything, that's what makes it null. "I aceccept the null
hypothosis" mean exactly the same as "I haven't the foggiest
idea".

If test after test fails to prove anything at all then that dosn't
give you any scientific grounds for drawing any conclusions,
regarless of whether or not the people conductiong the tests
where trying to show that people can hear a difference due
to comb materials.

Patrick

Let's be specific. In this case what the tests show is that people could not identify a timbral difference due to comb material. I certainly agree that doesn't prove the null hypothesis, but it does show that under controlled circumstances people could not hear a difference.

> If test after test fails to prove anything at all then that dosn't

There are two separate issues here: the scientific study of phenomena and the practical usage of data. Of course you cannot prove that comb materials don't effect timbre (I never said you could), you can however show that people fail to hear a difference in repeated tests. The practical and real-world usage of that is a different matter than the purely scientific question (and if I conflated the two I apologize). In real world terms we can proceed as if comb material does not effect the timbre because it has not been shown to do so.

James Cotton is THE reigning KING of blues harp and he is no where close to
bdicating. He is still awesome and totally dedicated. He is more than just a
op blues harp player and he has a new CD coming out next month called "Giant".
ww.jamescottonsuperharp.com His concert at Lincoln Center was amazing. The
est part was seeing Pinetop Perkins on piano and watching Mr. Cotton with
ubert Sumlin. Willie Big Eyes Smith was there too. You could see they were
aving fun and the music was great. They got standing ovations.
lso for the list Billy Branch and Willie Big Eyes Smith and Lee Oskar and James

Comb tone comparison testing shall now proceed to the next level.Which comb has
etter action?Wood is by far the slowest,a wet icicle is the fastest
aterial.Forget tone,think action,which combs let you glide effortlessly.Tone
ifferences are at the microscopic level ,so now thats out of the way,go for the
ction of a comb,if its glass go pyrex.
