More about vibrato; I'm not quite done. What follows is predicated on
agreeing that, in music, vibrato is a pitch change and tremolo is a volume
change. If you don't agree, read no further.
To my mind, no harmonica player can have a pure diaphragmatic vibrato
(i.e. no contribution from any organ above the collarbone) for the simple
reason that the diaphragm alone cannot affect the pitch of a note. The
diaphragm can and does affect the volume of a note. Anyone purporting to
demonstrate throatless diaphragmatic vibrato (what a mouthful!) is
demonstrating tremolo, or, if a pitch change is heard, the player is
involving his/her throat without recognizing it. (Or involving at least
the tongue and/or lips and/or mouth shape-- I think some players can get a
vibrato without involving their throat).
Cheers,
