Rick,
I've worked on melodicas, my eight-year-old son, David II, likes to play
them. His latest thing is working on this Blue October song. I've done
complete dissassemblies on both for cleaning. The reeds looked a lot like
harmonica reeds. They were brass. My guess about the tone is the reeds are a
more removed from tonal resonance of the human innards than a harmonica,
although there is still tonal resonance with the body.
