A while back, a pro player that I really respect suggested that when playing
with a band or accompanist you have not practiced with it is better on some
numbers to ask them to let you play a few bars "naked" with no accompaniment
and then let them come in as they catch the groove.

That's what I do. If you check my videos, you will see that I always run a few bars of lead in...Acapulco. But my method may not be suited to others. I happen to break meter, and it works for me. Others may prefer to let the band lead out first and then slip in. Unfortunately with that method, the band may not be on a tempo or groove that you would prefer. It's always best to give a few finger snaps to the drummer and bass (preferably with keyboard watching) to give them the tempo, while uttering words like: 'Beguine', slow shuffle, bossa, fast march, jazz waltz, and yada yada.

  Every time I have tried
this it has not worked out well.

Then the other musicians weren't 'in synch' with EACH OTHER. .

I really like this sound when this is done
right and the guy I got the tip from pulls it off flawlessly every time.

Sure, he must be experienced with playing with others. I have known a lot of (otherwise) stellar soloists whom have trouble playing with others. On the other hand, I hear people who semi suck but can pull it off when surrounded (and covered) by others.

Does anybody else do this? Suggestions? Comments?

Yes, you do this when you and the band are unfamiliar with each other.
