In the 1890s the Band of the US Marines was led by the famous
American composer John Philip Sousa, who was a great advocate of the
harmonica as a tool for popular musical education. Hohner named the
instument after the band in his honor. As the English speaking world
was (and still is) the largest market for their instruments, Hohner
naturally used a lot of English names. They also used Portuguese,
Italian and other languages where it was appropriate for the market
