I always have an A on hand. It has a nice full tone and I can use the
7-10 hole blows easily.
SometimesI make the rounds to several clubs and sit in with a variety
of bands. If I sing, and get to choose a key for the song, I pick E
(as the song key) as it is most comfortable for my voice. The A harp
is a "utility" key for those songs in 2nd position , which is the
position I am most comfortable with.
For rock bands I also keep a D handy as the action is quicker for fast
runs. I also like a D for playing outdoors as the higher key seems to
project farther.
All that said, I hardly ever go out without a full set A,Bb,
C,D,E,F&G. I just leave most of them in the car just in case I end up
playing a full set with another band.
