Why play 4th or 3d when you can play 5th?

Well, to me, in the end, each of the positions that I've been able to enjoy using at all has entirely different character. While the notes you get in each position are of course of great importance, there are a world of other reasons for these different characters.

Some contributing factors:
The various chords you get
The various kinds of melodies that emerge due to the proximity of notes
The typical harmonica licks such as trills - adjacent draws or blows in other words
The notes you get that are not actually in the general key you're playing in but sound good anyway, especially against certain chords
Which notes of the scale become bendable
Though I'll always be a second position specialist, I love changing up my overall sound by using these positions. A few years ago I picked up the wrong harp in the studio, as I was about to record a solo. It happens I picked up the first-position harp. I just went with it and got a solo that had an entirely different, and more appropriate, feeling than I would've gotten in second, and of course only one note choice was different.
