I don't think this has to be the case. It certainly isn't with me.
I'm not saying I have perfect tone but what I do have is the ability
to vary my tone at will as to make it more appropriate for the song.
My smooth, clean "jazz" tone isn't great for blues likewise, I
wouldn't use a harsh back of the throat tone for jazz or other melodic
music.
