Re: [Harp-L] Chromatic Harmonica Tuning.

Equal temperament will be best for a chromatic....as with any instrument with fixed pitches for each note and to be played in different keys.

Some reeds could be out-of-tune. You could be inconsistent in how hard you blow/draw. The low-pitched reeds will go flatter with greater breath pressure. The high reeds are affected less by breath pressure. Thus you may choose to tune the low reeds a bit sharper that the high ones.

I have found that pianos in general tend to be flat, especially ones that are tuned infrequently. To tune to 442 when the piano is 438 sounds really bad. Electronic keyboards are more likely to be right on 440. A lot depends on who you will be playing with.

I checked the tuning on some of my Chromatic Harmonicas, and they are all over the place. So, what tuning scheme seems to be the best ?

I always assumed that they were tuned to equal temperament, at about 442. I checked a Super 64 that I just bought, and it is all over the map, at least with my tuner set at equal.

Thanks again.
