Setting up an instrument to one's personal preferences applies to many
instruments. I find gapping a harmonica very analogous to what string
players call "action": the distance between the string and the fretboard.

A flat-picker playing Bluegrass would generally use a higher action than a
fingerstyle soloist would.  No one guitar-not matter how finely made-would
satisfy all players. It would generally require some set-up for the
individual using it. Same for harmonicas. I have several custom harmonicas,
but I have tweaked everyone of them here or there to make it work better for
my individual style of play.

Whatever works best for you is how you want to set-up your instrument. There
must be some personal involvement of the player if they wish to optimize
the driveability of their musical vehicle. He/She should learn how to fine
tune the set-up, find someone who can to do it for them, or wing it out of
the box. It's part of the territory-and the fun.
