First of all Winslow has once again given a very precise and accurate
explanation of the subject.

I always refer to them as valves (an opening and closing device) when
discussing diatonics, since their use in diatonics performs that function.
They do make the diatonic more airtight which ends up being an added
benefit, at least in my opinion.
