[Harp-L] Re. Madcat's Mic

I heard Madcat playing his Madcat Shaker at the 2007 NAMM, and he very
kindly sold it to me at the end of the show. I've been enjoying using it
since then.
 
The ability to shape hand effects while having instant access to a volume
control is the best thing about this mic. It is also very sturdy and
ergonomically designed. The output is lower than for other popular harmonica
mics but (as Madcat says), that can be easily compensated for by altering
the settings of your gear. If you run it through effects pedals the tone can
be shaped to your liking, as with any other mic.
 
Shaker have redesigned their mics recently, including the Madcat. Though you
can still buy it in wood at a premium price, the standard cheaper version
now comes in a lightweight black resin that Shaker say has good resonant
qualities. I find it more comfortable to hold too. They make a bigger mic in
the same format called the Mad Dog, which has a different sound (more bottom
end). They also have a high-output bullet-style mic called the Retro Rocket.
 
I must admit some interest in posting this. I was enjoying testing their
mics at this year's NAMM Show so much that the kind folks at Shaker gave me
a couple. I was really struck by their enthusiasm and commitment to quality
of sound and build. They're a small family firm producing a unique product
to a top standard, the kind of company that America produces in such
wonderful abundance :)
