R: [Harp-L] Background (Rhythm) harmonica
I think Wr here got the point! Here (in Italy) there's too many harp players
who think they are paid for each notes they play (more they do more they
earn)...HAHAHA. In my opinion a harp player who isn't playing the solo
should let the songs breath. I mean: rhythmic is something really hard to do
sometimes so play with the guitar and mix your pattern with some bass line
is what you need to do. I use to play the same line with the bass when the
tunes needs some boost (you hear when you need to do it) and add some
answers after the singer when it's needed. But what I better like to do is
NOT PLAY when I hear that the tunes don't need anything more (in this case:
my harp).
Cheers!

I had one harmonica lesson, it was in '84 or '85. 30 minutes with
Madcat, at Elderly Instruments when it was in East Lansing. And I had
one specific question -- what to play when it wasn't solo time. His
suggestion was to play with some part of the bass line or mimic the
rhythm guitar. Still works for me. Doesn't call for anything fancy,
and you don't get in the way (at least, no more than the bass and
rhythm guitar do).
I didn't grow up to be a pro harmonica player, but I can sit in with
some real talented folks, have a few moments in the spotlight, and not
p--- off the singer/band/audience. Thanks, Madcat.
