I agree.  Use a good toothbrush, electric preferably, and spend at least half the brushing time massaging the gums.  Use mouthwash before playing the harmonica and keep your harmonicas hygienically clean.   If you do this, and look after your lips (don't let them get all dry and abraded when playing and watch out for sunburn in summer), you should avoid all trouble.  I use a sunblock on my lips in summer (no scent but containing aloe vera) and a thin, unscented lip-cream very occasionally when playing if I begin to feel any soreness from playing too much (as if I would...)
