Wow!
This board sure is touchy! First of all, I inserted the word 
"necessarily". In other words, performance skills are not our 
"exclusive" purpose in learning  theory. (IMO)

Then there's this:  "Granted, theory allows you to communicate with 
other musicians, but mostly with other musicians that also know theory." 
--------Isn't that essentially what I said by including "verbal and 
written form"?

I apologize for any misunderstanding my post generated. I'll try to 
choose my wording more carefully next time.
