If nobody likes to practice modes or scales, another idea is the play  
several songs in each of the positions under study.
 
 
Amazing Grace works in the key of C, F and G on a C harp.
For those counting positions, they are 1st, 12th and 2nd.
No bends required.
 
Or try Ode to Joy in 12 different positions on one harp to get a feel for  
the differences. 
 
That might be more fun than just playing modes or scales or  arpeggios.
 
Seems to me someone once put together a list of tunes that  demonstrated  
each of the  positions.
