Jim,

If you  play in what we call “Second Position”  it’s actually pretty  
hard to hit a really bad note playing  over I-IV-V chord changes in a  
major key. Use the following chart to determine what key of harmonica  
to use:

Key of song    Key of harp (2d position)

G                             C
A                             D
Bb                           Eb
B                             E
C                             F
D                             G
E                              A
F                              Bb

At the level you are at, do NOT attempt to play on a minor key tune.   
The above chart is for MAJOR key material.  If these guys have  
invited you to play, and it’s a karaoke night anyway, go ahead and  
play.  You will learn more from 10 minutes on stage than you will in  
10 weeks playing alone in your living room.

Just play by ear, play what you feel, be selective about how much you  
play (less is more) and HAVE FUN!
