Well the bottom line is the too many players who play amplified, instead of letting the rig doing the heavy lifting, AKA carrying out the volume, they generally tend to play with a very excessive breath force, especially when they're bending notes and that will blow out ANY harp no matter who makes them, and saying this, for a number of players, is too often best described as the "third rail" in the world of harmonica playing, something many players flat out don't want to hear, even tho it is 100% the cold, hard, brutal truth. If you play too hard all the time, you will ALWAYS blow out harps quick.
Arguably, the greatest amplified player of them all, Little Walter, in an interview done several months before he died (whioch appeared in one of the very first issues of Living Blues magazine) had said in the interview on why he preferred to play amplified was, and I quote, "so I don't have to be blowin' so hard." Unfortunately, too many players don't heed that at all and saying that to many players gets you branded as a snoot, hater, etc., (and sometimes stuff that's at the point of being totally irrational) but it's the truth, and much of the stuff he played, like many greats playing amplified is NOT played hard at all, and often very softly.
In some ways, it's kinda like Three Stooges logic AKA "I listen but I don't pay attention," or "I'm so broke, I can't afford to pay attention."
Many of the greats never played anywhere near as hard as most people seem to believe, but too often it seems like you just can't tell them that at all. They may be believing the stuff music writers say in reviews, but remember this: first of all, many of them are NOT musicians to begin with (something like closer to 85%), and of the rest of them, maybe about 5% or less of them have ever played harmonica in their lives. When those people say "he's blowing so hard..." and all that, it may make for some very descriptive writing, but often isn't close to the truth, and remember, many of them are hired for their ability to write, and not necessarily their actual knowledge about anything, and this is the truth.
Like I said, the average player far too often just doesn't want to hear truth regarding breath force and how it relates to blowing out harps.

I guess I am on the other end of the spectrum from Bill. I blow out harps
all the time. My record is 3 in one night. I always carry backups in the 6
keys I use all the time (D, A, C, G, F & Bb). I am not sure if I am a hard
blower (or just a big sucker), if I eat too many hot peppers or just drool
too much. My worst "blow out" was when a sucked a reed clear out of the harp
and down my throat! I have tried blowing more softly but then a pretty girl
walks by or the blues sneaks up from behind. Harp type & key does make a
huge difference. Marine Band Deluxes out last anything else I have tried by
2 to 5 times. I seem to be especially hard on my D harps. Most of the
fast, hard hitting tunes, my band, Papa Juke, does are in A. I can go
through a D in one week with a Golden Melody, Special 20, Sydel or Lee
Oskar. I'll get 2 -3 weeks out of a D Suzuki Promaster (if I take care to
break it in nicely). The D Marine Band Deluxes generally last me about a
month or more which make them the most cost effective, and I love their
tone. I just got some Herring Vintages that seem like a better value than
the Marine Band Deluxes but just a notch down in tone as they are slight bit
"airier." (This could make them last better.) I'll let you know how they
fair but they feel real solid. Yes, I take all my harps off my taxes along
with other equipment and mileage to the gigs. I hope this helps if you are
also cursed with HBOD (harp blow out disorder).

Well Rick....in over 15 years of playing semi-professionally, I have had ONE
(1) reed break on a harp.
And I don't play lullabys and minuets either. Amped harp, and therein lies
the secret...let the AMP do
the work. Tight cup around the harp, around the mic, everything goes into
the amp. Yes, I do blow harp
with attack, and do bear down, so maybe I've been lucky? But I simply
haven't blown out but a single reed
in that time. I do break the harps in slowly, keep them clean (but not
obsessive about any cleaning schedule),
and that's about it. I haven't bought a harp in over a year or longer and
don't write them off my taxes
because harp playing isn't my work gig...it's a pasttime for me. I'll be
interested in what others have to
say because I'm sure my situation isn't typical. I can't even pinpoint my
harp durability to a single manufacturer
either, because in my stage case you can find Lee Oskar's, Hohner's, and
Suzuki harps. I CAN tell you that I
valve a lot of my harps, and there are valved models of each of the above
manufacturers in my case. I bend a LOT
of notes so I'm certainly not shy about playing hard.

First let me tell you about Dale the harp amp Doctor in Greensboro NC. You

purchased the original Harpking amplifier from Rod Piazza back in 2001. When
it was shipped to me, FedEx nearly destroyed this priceless piece of art. I
took it to several amp techs who were killer at guitar amps but the Harpking
blew there minds. I repaired it myself to some extent along with Tim HotRod
Hughes. Sadly, the amp was never the same.
Then comes a call from Rupert Oysler who met through my guitar player in
Brevard he tells me about a Harp amp he is having built and he wants me to
go and check it out. He said Dale and Mike with Megatone Amps are the real
deal. AND Dale should have no problem repairing my Harpking. (I know your
thinking why didn't he just ship the amp to Kinder?) After my shipping
nightmare if I can't drive it there it ain't going.
I went over to meet with Dale and he looked over my amp and said he
would call me in a couple of days meanwhile I tried out the WEZO 45 combo
that was waiting delivery to Rupert.
I magine if you will, plugging your favorite super hot mic into an amp
with the bass, middle, and treble all at the half way point and you've got a
KILLER tone. I knew then this was set up for harp. I played around for a
while and fell in love.
Dale called me the very next morning and had fixed the first harpking so
we set up a time to come back and do a side to side comparison along with
Mike Wesolowski.
I'll send more about that magical night on another post. I will be
adding a Wezo 45 to my arsenal I'll leave it at that. I am going to keep my
pair of kings too.
By the way, Dale can also modify the amp you are using now. I played
through a Kalamazoo bass amp that he did a mod to. It was so sweet when I
started playing. It sounded like my favorite premier amp and then he started
turning these magical hidden knobs until the amp was runnig wild. I'm still
in shock at what the man can do to an amplifier. Do yourself a favor and set
aside some time to check these guys out.
Sorry about the rambling it's hard to put this much emotion down on a
keyboard.

Just to put in my ten cents.
The Dan Electro Dan Echo pedal when modified is a fantastic pedal for
harmonica. Whether it's engaged or bypassed, it acts as a compressor
and adds subtle overdrive. The delays deteriorate with each repeat and
slowly modulate. With an earlier Green Bullet it's very nice for trad
Chicago blues.
The only negative is it has a little background noise, but if you use a
good adapter it's minimal.

It's an interesting question, though. I have played pretty steadily on
weekends the past two years and have yet to blow out a harp. I was playing
thru the PA with an SM58, but bought a Harmonica Honker and used that the
last few months. I do play pretty hard sometimes. My gig harps are SP20s and
Bushman. I switched out one SP20 because I had a newer one that was more in
tune, but otherwise, I'm going to blow these harps until they blow.
I do understand that blues guys in a loud amplified band are more likely to
wreck a harp than with the acoustic style our band has.

A local pro harp player and technician named Mike Peace has worked out a
solution to this problem that works for him and his clients. He converts
(primarily) Hohner harps to a configuration that allows you to replace
individual reeds as they blow out and keeps a good supply of reeds in stock
at his shop. I had him make a harp for me, a Special 20 in Melody Maker
tuning, and I love it. I intend to purchase more from him as my harps blow
out because I know that as long as Mike is alive and I don't crack the comb
or something, that harp can be repaired fairly cheaply. It's a good
solution.

Charlie Musselwhite has confirmed that he will be at SPAH this year for the
first 4 days of the convention. Charlie is coming on his own this year. He
is not on the roster as a headliner. He is coming this year just to be a
part of the fun! His plan is to just hang around and be Charlie among his
fellow harmonica enthusiasts. He did say that he was going to do something
that he hasn't done in the past conventions that he was a part of, he will
be participating in the night time blues jams! This is an awesome thing to
hear. Nothing is more exciting than to be sitting in a big circle with your
good friends and some your harp hero's at the same time. I have fond
memories of blues jams sitting next to the heavy hitters like Jelly Roll, PT
Gazelle, Madcat, Jason Ricci (just to name a few). Heck one night a few
years back Bonfiglio was hanging with the blues gang, sipping a beer and
blowing some awesome blues! Superstars aside I must say that the blues jams
really are a special thing for the time that you get to cut loose with your
friends from around the country and globe. I am not sure if any blues jam
would be complete for me if my adopted papa Dennis Frischette wasn't by my
side making me smile.

I've had my Sonny Jr. Four-Ten a long time. It's like an old friend.
Its big full sound taught me a lot about how to bring out my own tone,
and helped get my first gigs. It was my only amp until I bought the
Cruncher as a backup last year. The Cruncher has killer tone - a
little edgier than the Four-Ten, and as I've progressed (and don't
need to hide behind an overly muddy sound as much as I used to) I've
been really enjoying it. So when Sonny Jr announced the new Super
Sonny I was very interested to try it. I do some amp rebuilding so I
was fortunate that Gary was able to work with me to upgrade my Four-
Ten to Super Sonny specs.
I brought it to our pro jam on Wednesday where I was able to both
perform through it and hear it from the audience in the hands of other
capable harp players. I am absolutely thrilled with the results. It
cuts through better, breaks up more smoothly, projects better - more
responsive than it was before, and it was already a great amp. It is
also louder than it was before - rarely necessary thanks to the new
line-out but nice to have - and it was already a loud amp. What
impressed me more, though, was how, even when I was comp'ing quietly
underneath the guitar player/vocalist, the amp could be heard. Not
loud, not grating, just there, with great tone. Many other amps seem
to disappear in this situation when you're playing at an acceptable
volume, which means IN the mix, not on top of it.
Aki Kumar is a friend, fellow Four-Ten owner and excellent harp
player. He was there that night and noticed the difference
immediately. After some of my work he came up to me and said "WHAT did
you do to that amp - it sounds GREAT!" I'm sure he'll be looking into
upgrading his amp now too. I was lucky to hear Aki play through the
rig while I was out on the floor - great tone across a wide dynamic
range.
Having worked with Gary at Sonny Jr amps for years now, I have come to
deeply trust and respect his ears - he really knows harp tone. I tend
to take his advice in that regard. The Super Sonny is no exception. I
can't wait to play it again.

Beaulieu Vineyards, Jameson's Whiskey, Vons and Hows groceries, as well as
all those of you whose products I don't have but probably should: While I
appreciate your products and think they're often better than your
competition, I am opportunistic, simple-minded and cheap, thus I can't
promise to always use your product at my larger gigs (or my smaller ones,
depending on our arrangements.)
