Very interesting, thanks for that Bob!

It was interesting as well to see the parrallel the author drew with the furore over illegal downloading, P2P networks, sampling etc "I have, over the course of many years, turned from somewhat of a hack into a fairly respectable local professional jazz saxophonist, very much on the strength of what I have learned from illegal fake books. In this regard, copyright has been nothing but an obstacle to personal growth and artistic achievement."

The discussion here recently about the iphone's real book app got me thinking about the story I heard about the original real books. Apparantly, the person who put it together got prosecuted for copyright violation had the originals confiscated and then wrote them out again from memory in his prison cell - which is why there's so many mistakes in them. Does anyone know anymore about this?
