I'd have to disagree with Vern's statement that at a jazz jam, "Showing what you can do is primary" (though, unfortunately, many musicians share that idea).

What is primary at any kind of jam, jazz or otherwise, is that musicians can have fun making music together, without the need to please an audience. For instance, they can spend 12 minutes playing a single tune in all 12 keys if it amuses them - might bore an audience to tears but be great fun for the participants.

Individual display is only one potential component of that fun.
