Subject: [Harp-L] SPAH Entertainment Schedule

What an incredible list of performers and happenings!

I'd like to address something a bit more mundane...

For those first-timers at SPAH - don't think it's set up the way a typical
'Convention' is set up - such as a big Hall with vendors lining the
sides...no such thing.

This is a Hotel - there is a specific area for SPAH and certain rooms set
up for the stores, maybe some open areas (last year the Young-at-Harp,
Registration tables and others were set up in the open)...but while your
interest is probably hugely piqued by many of these artists and times listed
below - do yourself a favour and print up Warren and Winslow's posts (even
though you will receive a printed schedule when you register)...because there is
SO much going on in the hallways - people gathering and playing in groups
everywhere you look - you will be hard-pressed getting yourself past some
of them, or being able to tear yourself away from an impromptu jam; you will
most likely miss many of those you originally intended to see simply
because where you were was so much fun and there aren't enough hours in the day
to do it all.

That's what SPAH is all about...the wee gatherings and mini-jams here and
there...some sitting, but a lot standing in packed hallways or even in
someone's room. It's all brilliant and incredible FUN!! Be prepared for an
amazingly good time. Finding time for breakfast or lunch will be the most
difficult ...and then rushing back to brush teeth and play again ...(is always
one of my difficulties) - I solve it by hardly eating at all at any SPAH
(only wish it showed) :)

If you're going alone and don't know anyone - that's why we all wear
nametags - INTRODUCE YOURSELF to the people around you - we were all shy and
uncomfortable the first few times - you WILL make friends. If you're hungry and
don't want to eat at the hotel - ask if others are going out to eat - see
if they've room for you. If not, don't take it as a brushoff - occasionally
cars are already full. I've taken buses or cabs... so find another group -
or scout around for other wandering individuals who may be in the same
position as yourself...there is a bulletin board (or used to be) where one
could post..

...If someone is eating alone at the Hotel and you don't wish to sit by
yourself - ask if they're part of the Convention and ask to join them if
they're looking as lost as you feel....this is how we all get to know our fellow
harp players. There's no reason anyone should feel left out and lonely at
a SPAH.

The ladies host a hospitality room (or suite) every year - with coffee/tea
and usually donuts ...find your way there and introduce yourself. They
might be able to steer you to someone else alone, or there just might be
another there in the same boat. SMILE at those you pass in the hallways - ask
about their harmonicas - show yours. Join the groups - listen in. Talk to
those around you. You'll be welcomed. Nobody plays 'star' at SPAH....

I still have 'new' (to me) harp-l'ers come up to me at each SPAH to
introduce themselves and ask if I'm 'the' Elizabeth from harp-l'....(usually I
check first to see if they're smiling before responding in the affirmative) ;)
