[Harp-L] Re: Sam Hinton
Hi-
Sam Hinton is an amazing and completely unique harmonica player. I first
heard about him from the editor of Sing Out!-they did a story on him a while
back. Then, when George Winston came through town here a few years back, he
invited me to one of his concerts. Backstage, he told he he was a longtime
reader of my Sing Out! harmonica columns and gave me a Sam Hinton CD, which
he had produced. On Winston's suggestion, I started a transcription of the
Downfall of Paris, but it was insanely hard to get down on paper accurately
, as Hinton uses straight tongueblocked chords on his 10-hole diatonica as
well as octave splits ranging from 3 to 5 holes. I never finished the
tranascription because my editor said he couldn't give me enough space to
run the whole thing.
Winston is a fine harmonica player as well, but I think his producer was
right in that his remarkable piano playing probably has a more broad-based
appeal.
