Also, check out local colleges and community colleges - many have music  
programs and may offer courses in Jazz Theory 101. It helps to have a teacher 
to  demonstrate and explain.

Back in  school we had a  great class called jazz styles and analysis,
We  looked at jazz solos by the greats. MIles, Coltrane, Bill Evans.
It  influenced my playing a lot. This was an advanced course. I think it
was  late junior or senior year level.

There are books that have many solos  transcribed.
