[Harp-L] Shaker Madcat Microphone

I have had a Shaker Madcat Microphone for years, but have never played a gig
with it. I got it out last week, plugged it in and realized why I put it
away years ago having never performed with it--the amp has to be turned up
really high until the white noise is unbearable just to hear the harp
through this mic.
Is low gain a characteristic of this mic?
Do most players using this mic also use a pre-amp?
