Blues is the art of mixing two disparate musical concepts-- there's the
three against two rhythmic feel (similar to Latin music but it swings) and
there's the natural versus the flatted third--blues has a walking bass with
a natural 3rd. The lead usually plays flatted.
Also realize that swing is not exactly a triplet with the first note held
for two beats and the third note held for one beat. It's somewhere in
between straight eight and triplets. Likewise blues notes are not exactly a
half step lower, but rather somewhere between natural and flatted. Since
piano is a popular insturment and bending notes is a pain on a piano, we use
shorthand. But real good musicians exploit the swing and the flatted notes
and give it a lot of expression. Don't forget you can flatten the 1 as well.
