I saw JW  here in Auckland around maybe '93 '94 and he was definitely on 
'dial in'
Plus the show was mainly funk and I don't think he played any more than a 3 
note riff in a song all night.
BUT: heres the strange part,after that gig we all went to a  late night 
'blues bar' around the corner and who turns up,unannounced, but JW 
himself(accompanied by the obligatory 8' Mr T ,who I must say kept a very 
low profile)
               Our table had a couple of extra seats so I just kinda waved 
him over(few beers in me)
             Anyways to cut a loong story short all he wanted to do was 
talk (and play) Harp.
I (of course) had a Hohner in my pocket so I started a simple boogie 
progression and JW wailed the lead.....The crowd (most of whom had been at 
the show) loved it.
              I think that maybe part of that dial in culture that quite a 
few of the originals seemed to be part of was because they were being told 
by the money men that they had to become "Hip "and that the money was in 
anything but blues......I dunno

One of the 'originals' who performs down under reasonably often is Charlie 
Musselwhite and I have never seen him do a dial in yet
