I realized after reading this that I've been playing the melody incorrectly for, like, ever--substituting an Eb (draw 2 double bend) for the low Ab. My guess is that no one complained up to now because they thought I was harmonizing it on purpose. Oh well...
Anyway, the melody lays out in 5th position (in the key of F, that means a Db harp), which would give you both the high and low flat 3rd. However, playing up in that octave might not be ideal. Also, I don't know if I'd want to take the solo in 5th position. Lots more to work with in 2nd, I think.
Did somebody say "play it on the chromatic"? Hmmm...
