Cara's post is excellent. Bluegrass is a genre which requires study, and
all the good bluegrass players have worked hard at it. The fiddle tunes
lie at the heart of bluegrass, anyone wanting to get into bluegrass
needs to learn them. No different from other genres. Good jazz players
have worked hard at their repertoire, classical players likewise.
Bluegrass fiddle tunes are challenging, but they are accessible to
harmonica players.
For those who don't know Cara (its hard to be on harp-l, bluegrassharp,
or at SPAH and not know her), she is an exceptional player, with a deep
knowledge of the bluegrass repertoire. She is also one of the only
players I've met who can improvise harmonies.
