Re: [Harp-L] Harp Dream (this is as real as it gets)
There are two sides to the brain - right and left. One side is intuitive, th
e other is rational. Rational side holds the voice that talks to you in your
head - your ego voice - telling you what you can and can't do, telling you to
watch out, you may screw up, telling you that others are judging you, etc.
This stuff is garbage chatter and gets in the way of flow.
When one is sick (temperature of 101 or higher), drunk, or "altered",
sometimes the rational side of the brain just shuts down, opening the floodgates of
the intuitive side - where creativity and music live - allowing it to flow
w/out censorship.
I believe this is what Abner experienced. I've experienced it. Others have,
too.
Along with learning to play music, one should understand and begin to quiet
down the judgmental voice that keeps up that incessant chatter in one's head -
it helps with the music.

What a great story!
I firmly believe that the subconscious mind continues to work on
"problems" long after the conscious mind has stopped "thinking" about
them. This is the basic principle in the old book Think and Grow Rich.
For example: Have you ever gone to sleep at night trying to remember
someone's name or the name of a song, only to wake up the next morning
and blurt out the name almost instantly? While you were sleeping, your
subconscious mind continued to rummage through the file cabinet of your
brain until it found what you were looking for.
I have always felt that this is true with my harmonica playing as well.
For example: I will play along with a CD of one of my heroes, trying in
vain to get a particular riff. No matter how hard I try and how many
times I try, I just can't get it. A week or two later, I put on the same
CD and tag the riff the first time through, as if I had been playing it
for years. My mind continued to work on the problem. My mouth "knows"
where the notes are. My mind knows which notes I need and the techniques
needed to get them. The problem is in getting my mind and my muscles to
cooperate simultaneously. During the absence from playing, my mind
continued to develop a system by which it would communicate to my mouth
in the most efficient way. Of course, it doesn't just happen because you
want it to. Without putting in the practice time, your body's systems
have no basis or foundation from which to build a plan of attack. If you
cut the road bed, your mind will add the pavement, so to speak.
I know that this sounds like voodoo mumbo-jumbo, but I really believe
that it happens. I think that this is what happened in Abner's dream.
His mind clicked and he began playing all of those tunes he had been
working on, but never quite figured out while he was awake. I bet if he
had a recording of it, he would have said: "I've been trying to get that
lick for months!"

One night I had the strangest dream.
I dreamt I was in a dark room and I could not see.. I was feeling around
with my hand and found a Harmonica so I started playing I mean really
playing, sounding great. the tone everything was coming together..
the next morning I told my wife about this strange dream...
ding, ding, ding for the one that got the ending...
My wife said it was not a dream.
She told me seconds after I went to bed I was waking around like a blind
man felling the walls picked up a harp and I started playing , she
asked me if I was playing a "C" harp and I told her there is not such
thing. WE all know that the "C" harp is like the main harp most of the
teaching books prefer. Then I went to bed laid on her chest and I was
playing for half and hour.....
I asked for if she thought this was strange she agreed but see did not
know what to do....
so I asked her how did I sound...
She said I was good, real good...
my wife loves me but she wont lie to me, she knows music and sings very
well...
we still talk about that night and other strange things. Since they
don't deal with the harp I will leave these stories out.
Something I had to share with you guys.....
so my trick is to start recording while I'm sleeping and make it big as
the first sleeping blues player...
