This is one "X" factor that hasn't been discussed as much as thinking of  
ones' self and ones' amp. If a band knows how to play as a supportive unit, loud  
volume is never an issue. Jam sessions are notoriously out of this realm, 
being  more about "DIG ME", "NO, LISTEN TO ME", "NO, MEEEE FIRST".
 
As to that wall of Marshall Amps used on the main stage, I've actually seen  
situations where these amps are "shells" used for the visual alone, with a 
small  amp mic'ed sitting behind for the actual sound. There is something to be 
said  for these visuals adding to the impression the audience gets from the 
stage set  up. 
 
For example, when I was demo'ing my BOSE system to a Convention Hotel in  
Orlando, the GM agreed that it sounded much better than the HUGE system that was  
brought in for some of these 500 seat dinners, but shared with me that the  
client comes to expect something visually HUGE when they hire or pay for sound  
reinforcement - therefore, they would prefer something that doesn't sound 
nearly  as good, but looks big.
 
Go figure.
