Buying a chord harp is not something you should do on a whim!

Chord harp is used in an ensemble as an accompanying instrument. Unless you have others with whom you plan to play, e.g. in a harmonica duet, trio or quartet, a chord harmonica is a big investment not likely to pay off for you. I advise you to see/hear some chord harps in action at a harmonica convention or on Youtube before taking the plunge.

Playing a chord harp well requires substantial skill and long practice. Do you want to make that investment in time and effort?

Knowing what chords go with the melodies is a skill that will improve your overall musicianship and presumably your playing as a secondary effect. You could conceivably learn that with a chord harp in your mouth.

You could also learn chords using a keyboard, ukulele or guitar. Then you could accompany yourself playing diatonic or Hands-Free-Chromatic on a rack. That would not only teach you the chords but would be, IMO, more entertaining as well....not only for you but for your audiences.

I bought a similar instrument (a bass harmonica) on a whim but have not practiced it much because I have no ensemble with which to play.

Just my $0.02 worth. Maybe you'll hear from some chord players with different advice.
