Re: [Harp-L] Re: Butter TV spot - and Better Days band

Because I was 17 (or thereabouts) and was wanting to be the baddest harp player around. Butterfield and Mayall were the hot blues harmonica players that most people knew about and therefore were, in my mind, the guys I had to beat.

I was in Vancouver and saw him a fairground exhibition hall where I also saw Hooker, Willie Dixon (with Big Walter and Koko Taylor), Cotton, Johnny Littlejohn, Steve Miller, and many others. I had alway gone backstage to meet my harmonica heroes (or could hang out with them in clubs as with Musselwhite), and at this Butterfield concert I was completely mystified to find a guy with a badge barring access to the backstage area, politely telling me that I couldn't go back there. So I never got to meet Butterfield, who at the time was equal parts hero and nemesis in my mind.

On the tune "Small Town Talk" (which is also on the album) he played some sweet little fills in Draw 6-7-8, along with the occasional blow note poking through. It was the prettiest stuff I ever heard him do, but he didn't do it on the record, as I found out later :(
