I have two things to add to this thread before we put it to bed:
1) You get a much fuller idea of what Willa Mae was about on the
"Gunsmoke Blues" DVD, where she fronts Muddy Water's band for a set. Of
course it has a great segment of Mud and his band with George Smith on
harp, especially for GHS fans (like me). Also, it has some nice footage
of Big Joe Turner. Great DVD, all in all, highly recommended.
2) As to SPAH, I'd like to see an homage to the AFBF Big Mama segment
with a great female harper like Beth Kohnen kicking it off and a
potpourri of today's great male blues harpers following. Not a
comparison or contest, mind you, an *homage*. That would be way cool
IMHO. What say, Beth? Grant Dermody? Buzz Krantz? Joe Filisko?
______, ______, .... (fill in the blanks.... :^) We all hold the
OBG blues harpers in high esteem, and many or most of us have emulated
them at one time or another; why not honor them with homages to terrific
performances like the Big Mama video segment?
