Thanks Madcat for drawing attention to this beautiful quote. It's probably the most poignant and authentically descriptive mention of the harmonica in American literature. Steinbeck was friends with Woody Guthrie and no doubt picked up more than a few ideas from him, not just about music. If you haven't already read The Grapes of Wrath you've missed something, it's brilliantly written and deeply moving (even for expatriate Brits ;-)
