[Harp-L] RE: Harp-L Digest, Vol 76, Issue 11

As "hobbyist" level machines, I had in mind the various micro mills that are now available for (oh, just to cover the field) under $3000.00. Most of them have a specified 0.001" positioning accuracy. I understood that means +/- 0.001" from the specified position. I guess my assumption (bad, in retrospect) was that professional level machines (Bridgeport, Haas, etc.) were capable of much greater accuracy. My tool and die friend has a Bridgeport (about the size of a compact car) in his professional machine shop but I haven't gotten a chance to use it (yet). I did find a professional machine on the Microlution Web site that specifies a positional accuracy of +/- 0.00004" (+/- 1 micron). Perhaps that's a bad case of overkill for creating the machines which punch out reedplates. I have no idea what that machine would cost, but assume: "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it."

I've fantasized about making my own reeds and reedplates, as you know. I realize the enormous challenges that face me, if I am bullheaded (crazy?) enough to attempt it.

As always, thank you for the very informative reply.

Regards,
Crazy Bob
