I don't pretend to understand the scientific methadology but in summary:

"Nearly 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes involved some
form of driver inattention within three seconds before the event. Primary
causes of driver inattention are distracting activities, such as cell phone
use, and drowsiness."

The longer you engage in distracting behavior, the greater the likelihood of
a crash.

Bear in mind we have limited attentional capacity. If it's dark, raining,
rush hour traffic, Little Walter is playing, you're playing along,
passengers are chatting, you're drinking coffee--you're dealing with a
finite resource.
