Beginners Harmonica for Adults (ages 13 and above)

Learn to play simple traditional folk songs and elementary blues on one of America's most popular, portable instruments.
Basic techniques such as bending, rolling, tongue-blocking, vibrato, and wah-wah will be covered.
Individual attention given to each student. No musical background is required.

$8 materials fee payable to the instructor for a manual on the first night.
Students will also need to bring a 10-hole diatonic key of C major harmonica
(such as the Hohner Special 20 or Hohner Pro Harp) on the first night of class.
(Optional: bring a tape recorder and blank tape.)

8-9:15pm

This course continues the work with the harmonica and focuses on some outstanding country, folk, blues and traditional songs.
Students will work with recordings and transcriptions of songs like
"Amazing Grace," "You Are My Sunshine," "Shenandoah," "Georgia," and some blues songs.
The instructor will spend time on bending, the mastery of which distinguishes the great harmonica players from the rest.
Lots of individual attention will benefit everyone.

Bring a 10-hole diatonic key of C-major harmonica such as the Hohner Special 20, Hohner Pro Harp, or equivalent, to first class.
Required text may be purchased for $8 from the instructor the first night. (Optional: bring a tape recorder and blank tape.)

Jason Ricci's Harmonica Blow OFF is an annual event that showcases Jason's harmonica friends,
ranging from lesser known players and up-and-coming stars to established legends.
This event is made possible by the huge variety of harmonica players who swarm together to
celebrate the instrument at the annual SPAH harmonica convention.

Everyone is welcome. You don't have to attend SPAH (or know any secret handshakes).
But you do need to get there early -- this event usually sells out quickly, and the Torch Club's capacity is only 100!

The Blow OFF will feature a wide array of styles and harmonica types. Naturally, the blues plays a strong part.
But you'll also hear jazz and folk artists (sometimes accompanied by violins and tubas),
and even a sophisticated harmonica trio playing show tune medleys with great panache!
The Blow OFF embodies the SPAH mission of "Preservation and Advancement of Harmonica,"
even though it is not formally related to or sponsored by SPAH.

The Blow OFF is also a great party, a relaxed, fun time away from the convention hotel,
hanging loose with all our harmonica friends as a prelude to a week of wonderful moments at SPAH.

The Blow OFF schedule of events is structured loosely, to allow for the chemistry and interplay between
the audience and the featured artists, all extremely talented and very different from one another.
Many artists will also have merchandise for sale to feed your enthusiasm and memories.

With so many great players, we have to keep each artist's set short (about 20 minutes).
We'll have many surprise guests and celebrity artists on hand, who may sit at the sole discretion of
individual performing artists booked for the event. (Please don't ask Jason for someone else's stage time.)

The 1st European Blues Masterclass presents courses by three top players on today's European blues scene.
Steve Baker, Martin Röttger and Dick Bird have been performing professionally for decades and all have extensive teaching experience.
The courses are directed at amateur musicians of all ages and levels of ability and offer four days of intensive instruction, combining
theory and musical practice, with ample opportunity for sessions in the evenings.

The event will culminate in a public concert by all three instructors on Saturday, August 23rd.

La Maison du Kleebach

Le Kleebach is located near Munster in the idyllic countryside of Eastern France only one hour by car from Strasbourg.
The modern, well appointed seminar house offers seven separate teaching rooms (five of them with a piano), full board and
lodging for up to 72 people in rooms with 1 – 3 beds + bathroom (single room surcharge), an open air concert stage, a comfortable bar,

The meals are prepared on the premises by the house chef using natural products from the region.

* Steve Baker - Harmonica Blues and Beyond

This course will concentrate on mastering the essential playing techniques on the diatonic harp and integrating them into a musical context. Steve has always placed

great value on learning to treat the harmonica as a musical instrument like any other and this will be reflected in the course, which covers not only blues, but will

also look at how to use the instrument effectively in a variety of musical styles. Exact content will depend on the interests and abilities of the students.

Topics will include some or all of the following (not necessarily in this order):

* Improving your basic sound:
How to hold the harp most effectively;
Breathing, air column & resonance chamber;
Lipping / Tongue block;
Intonation, building tone, ear training

* Improving your technique:
Learning controlled note bending;
The topography of the harp - which note is where, and why every note is different; Vibrato - the different types and how to create them;
Enclosure, hand effects;
Tongue blocked intervals (octaves & other intervals);
Trills and double notes, playing “dirty”;
Overblows and how to use them simply and effectively

* The most common positions and how they work:
Cross harp / 2nd position, blues basics;
1st position folk and blues;
3rd position folk and blues;
Other positions

* Playing with others:
Accompaniment;
Timing & rhythm;
Phrasing - how to make it swing;
Improvisation;
Harmony & the harp;

* The harp in other styles: rock'n'roll, country, funk, pop;
Microphones & amps, other gear such as effects

* Taking it further:
Tuning & repair;
Alternate tunings (Country/Major 7th, SBS, Natural minor & others)

* Jamming:
The last lesson every day will be spent jamming together, either to playalongs, guitar accompaniment or unaccompanied.
