Re: [Harp-L] Big River TV Promo

The first time I did it was at the Walnut St. Theatre in Philadelphia.
Joe Baker was the music director. It was done a lot like the Broadway version.
Some actors had done it on Broadway and the National tour.
Chuck Abbott Directed. Our only line was NONESUCH!
I auditioned over the phone LOL This ran for five weeks

The second was in Maine at the Maine State Theatre. The set was shipped up
from philly. This time I stated the whole show myself. I came down from the
back of the theatre and at the fourth row the spotligh hit me and and I started the
oveture. When the fiddle came in I said, "Get ready for the Grand Right and Left"
and they went into square dance. A lot of the people from Walunt St were there.
It ran for four weeks

The third was at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre in Lancaster PA.
This wasn't an equity production. Not the best production but got
me out of philly for seven weeks. The three musicians opened opened
the show. The guitar played told people about the bathrooms and the
drinks etc. The poor actors waited talbles to. The did drinks orders at
the intermission. They would bring in the tour buses from everywhere.
My part of the pit was at room level. Some audiences would talk back
to the stage like a church service. "you tell 'em Huck" LOL

If you ever get a chance to do It I say go for it. Its great fun

Instruments I played: harmonica, bass harmonica and jaw harp.

I did this production in Dearborn, MI about 14 years ago. The Director was open
to unique ideas. I pitched him the idea of opening the show - curtains raised,
dark stage, sound of lone harmonica improvising around the main theme, spotlight
turns on following lone country dressed harmonica player as he strolls out of
stage?right to center stage while playing, pauses, looks around himself, and
begins the Overture - stage lights come on, band kicks in, fiddle and guitar
player enter on either side of harmonica player, energy spikes as dancers enter
stage from left, right and also come down the aisles past the audience onto the
stage - and he loved it.

This is how we began the show every night for the two week run. Talk about fun
and exciting. I even had a bit part as one of Huck's Boys - 2 speaking
lines, too.
