i've always thought that the debates about tone coming from player vs. gear
to be a bit silly, as it's clear both play a role. that became pretty
clear recently.
i had occasion to play through jason ricci's rig at last week's habitat
show,
sitting in on "as long as i have you". i played pretty much as i
usually do,
except for the unfamiliar mic and amplification chain. but i gotta say,
i've
never heard myself sound like that before. it's not like i played
especially
well. i never do when i'm nervous, and well, duh. but it sure came out
different, and i like the way it sounded. wish i had more time to play
with it.
i'm saving up longterm (kids in college; it'll be a while) for my
ultimate rig.
meanwhile i've got plenty of woodshedding to do. maybe by the time i get
it i'll have something worth playing through it.
