Re: [Harp-L] Harp Maintenance: Dealing with rusty screw on GM

You might want to try a drop or two of mineral oil, as it is much safer to use... It's a great lubricant for pocket knives to keep from rusting, and lubing the pins and springs, especially if you use the knife for cutting food.

When attempting to remove the screws, its probably best to secure the harp in a vice with the steel jaws protected with plastic or leather to keep from digging into the harmonica comb.

Baby Oil is just mineral oil with a fragrance added.

Olive oil might work too!

The main ingredient in WD40 is kerosene... great for freeing up some some things that are rusty or gunked with grease or removing tar from cars (but kerosene is actually better).

It really isn't a good lubricant, as it will dry up.

Alot of people use WD40 on their firearms or airguns to attemt to protect the bluing from rusting, but there are MUCH better products, like Rem Oil or Birchwood Casey sheath oil.

WD40 can be used with 0000 fine steel wool to remove rust, but then its best to follow up with the better rust preventitive like Rem Oil or BC sheath oil. I prefer Rem Oil.
