I especially like the use of the word safe here.
I have two friends with whom I play, usually once a week.  Every time I
learn, or try to learn something about the harp, I take it there to try it
out.
They, in their own turns of needing safety... Are second-third-umpth-rate
guitarists who still like to play guitar.
We all write songs and we try them out on one another.
It's friendship, therapy and music all rolled into an afternoon.
We'll probably never go public, but when I play out, I'm generally more
solid on the harmonica from having had a chance to try things with them. 
And..., it's fun!!

I coordinate our harp club jam.  We only have three rules:  (1) everybody
who wants to play gets to play, (2) appreciation is shown for every
performer, if not for the quality of their performance, at least for their
courage and willingness to participate and (3) no head cutting.  We have
every level of player from pros to high school kids who have just picked up
a harp.  Some of the best players in the region attend this jam and some,
like me, that have a way to go.  Abner, I'm not saying to stop doing the
regular jams but I would encourage you to also find a friendly harp club jam
like ours where you can make mistakes if you need to, learn a lick or two
from a pro and generally have a good time with your music without worry
about situations like the one you just encountered.
